Obiettivi formativi
The course is aimed at providing the students with an overview of the existing sources of renewable energy, the tools to compute energy and environmental balances and knowledge of technologies for biogas production from agricultural feedstocks.

At the end of the course, students will have the basic knowledge of the existing options for energy production through renewable sources and of their environmental sustainability. They will be provided with the necessary tools to correctly choose and dimension an anaerobic digestion plant.

Course introduction and goals.
Overview of energy consumption in agriculture.
The sources of renewable energy: solar, wind power, biomasses.
Biomass definition and characterization
Bio-chemical conversion of biomasses: overview and details on anaerobic digestion (plant typologies and dimensioning criteria, cogeneration units, digestate management).
Choice of feedstocks and feedstocks pretreatment to increase the methane yield of an anaerobic digestion plant.
Environmental assessment of an anaerobic digestion plant
Technical visits and exercises on some case studies
