Obiettivi formativi
This course is designed to familiarize students with the basic concepts of disturbance ecology and the main tools and techniques for forest ecosystem monitoring and management in relation to selected abiotic disturbances. The course has secondary goals of enhancing student critical thinking, reading and communication skills.

Risultati dell'apprendimento attesi
Understand the basics of the disturbance ecology of abiotic disturbances (with a focus on wildland fires), and their main effects on forest ecosystems.
Gain broad understanding of pre- and post-disturbance management techniques for impact mitigation.

During each class and field or lab activity, knowledge and understanding of previous lessons will be assessed through interactive discussion with the students.

Programma
- I principali agenti abiotici di disturbo: ruolo ecologico in relazione alla struttura ed alle funzioni degli ecosistemi forestali (Area tecnica speciale);
- Effetti, dinamiche post-disturbo e ricostituzione forestale (Area tecnica speciale);
- Analisi dei disturbi abiotici in foresta: caratterizzazione del singolo evento e del regime di disturbo (definizioni, tecniche di analisi mediante applicazioni GIS, telerilevamento ed ecologia del paesaggio) (Area tecnica speciale);
- Previsione dei disturbi abiotici in foresta: definizione e caratterizzazione di rischio/pericolo/vulnerabilità; applicazione di modelli di simulazione per comprendere come il disturbo interagisce con gli elementi del paesaggio e la vegetazione (Area tecnica speciale);
Disturbance as an ecological process in forest ecosystems;
Disturbance effects, post-disturbance dynamics, forest regeneration;
Analysis of abiotic disturbances: from the single event to the characterization of the disturbance regime;
Assessing and forecasting abiotic disturbances: characterizing risk, danger and vulnerability; applying simulation models to understand how disturbance interacts with landscape elements and vegetation to produce landscape mosaics;
Management of abiotic disturbances: main pre- and post-disturbance techniques; interactions between disturbances and anthropic interventions.
This lab is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the disturbance ecology of abiotic agents acting within forest ecosystems. This knowledge will be then applied to assess need for intervention and priorities, identifying proper management strategies to mitigate disturbance impact and facilitate post-disturbance restoration.

Note
Students will give a group seminar on a topic related to the class. A group of two or three students will research the topic, develop an extended outline and annotated bibliography, and lead a discussion during one class. Each group seminar should be approximately 10-15 minutes long and allow time for discussion.
Course grade: Class and field trip attendance, oral presentation, written assignment and final exam. In the final exam students will answer questions directly derived from lecture and assigned readings.
